"The Developmental Capacity of Nuclei Taken from Intestinal Epithelium Cells of Feeding Tadpoles" (1962), by John B. Gurdon

چکیده
In 1962 researcher John Bertrand Gurdon at the University of Oxford [3] in Oxford, England conducted a series of experiments on the developmental capacity of nuclei taken from intestinal epithelium [4] cells of feeding tadpoles. In the experiments, Gurdon conducted nuclear transplantation, or cloning [5], of differentiated cells, or cells that have already specialized to become one cell type or another, in tadpoles. Gurdon's experiment showed that differentiated adult cells could be induced to an undifferentiated state, where they could once again become multiple cell types. Gurdon's experiment disproved the theory that differentiated cells could not be undifferentiated or dedifferentiated into a new type of differentiated cell. Gurdon's experiment demonstrated nuclear transplantation [6], also called cloning [5], using differentiated cells.

The developmental capacity of nuclei taken from intestinal epithelium cells of feeding tadpoles.
INTRODUCTION A N important problem in embryology is whether the differentiation of cells depends upon a stable restriction of the genetic information contained in their nuclei. The technique of nuclear transplantation has shown to what extent the nuclei of differentiating cells can promote the formation of different cell types (e.g. King & Briggs, 1956; Gurdon, 1960c). Yet no experiments have s...

The technique of nuclear transplantation has been used to investigate the question whether somatic cell nuclei undergo changes in the course of embryonic differentiation (King and Briggs, 1955; Briggs and King, 1960; Fischberg et al., 1958; Gurdon, 196Oc). Such changes may affect those constituents of a nucleus which are required for embryonic development, and changes of this kind can be discov...

It is relatively unusual for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to be made, to a large extent, on the basis of a single author paper, published over 50 years ago, for work carried out by a graduate student. This was largely true of a paper published in 1962 in the journal Development (called at that time the Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology). The main subject of that pap...

In 1975 John Gurdon [4], Ronald Laskey [5], and O. Raymond Reeves [6] published ?Developmental Capacity of Nuclei Transplanted from Keratinized Skin Cells of Adult Frogs,? in the Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology. Their article was the capstone of a series of experiments performed by Gurdon during his time at Oxford and Cambridge, using the frog [7] species Xenopus laevis [8]. G...

The aim of these experiments was to test whether the developmental potential of nuclei from intestinal epithelial cells of Xenopus laevis tadpoles declined during the life of the functional larval gut. The results of transplantation of nuclei from three different stages of development were compared: stages 46-48, when feeding begins and while yolk is still present but before the formation of th...
